Weekend Sports in Brief (Yahoo Sports)

Minnesota football coach Tracy Claeys doubled down on his support for players who boycotted practices and threatened to skip a bowl game if 10 teammates suspended after a sexual assault investigation weren’t reinstated. Speaking publicly for the first time since a standoff between 110 Golden Gophers football players and the administration, Claeys said he understands the players’ frustration with a Title IX investigation that they felt was inherently unfair to teammates who were accused of assaulting a woman at an off-campus dorm in September. ”As kids, they have no problems being held to a higher standard than the university requires and should require,” Claeys said after Minnesota’s practice.

This was supposed to be Jacksonville’s year, the time for coach Gus Bradley’s always-positive approach to pay dividends with a drastically improved roster. Owner Shad Khan spent big in free agency for the second straight offseason and felt he had all the pieces in place for a playoff push. The Jaguars fell way short.

Jerry Rice was on the roster the last time the Oakland Raiders made the playoffs. The Raiders clinched a postseason berth Sunday by beating the San Diego Chargers 19-16 on Janikowski’s fourth field goal of the game, a 44-yarder with a little more than 2+ minutes remaining. ”One thing we know for sure: We are on our way,” coach Jack Del Rio told his players in the locker room after they improved to 11-3, alone in first place in the AFC West.

The demise in less than a week of Jeff Fisher and Gus Bradley as coaches of their respective teams provided examples. Rams owner Stan Kroenke and Jaguars boss Shad Khan grew tired of waiting for the on-field product to match their successes away from football. Consider some of these men in charge to be either in the endangered species class or approaching it: Marvin Lewis, Mike McCoy, Rex Ryan, Todd Bowles, John Fox and Chuck Pagano.

Ezekiel Elliott probably has a fine coming from the NFL for jumping into an oversized Salvation Army red kettle to celebrate a short touchdown run in a bounce-back win for the Dallas Cowboys. ”My dream is that the NFL would fine the daylights out of him, and I’m going to take them to the Supreme Court,” Jones joked after the Cowboys (12-2) moved closer to home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs with a 26-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday night.
