Nicaragua faced off against Venezuela in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the first inning, Nicaragua’s Steven Leyton grounded out, plating Norlando Valle for the early lead over Venezuela. In the fourth inning Venezuela’s Andres Gimenez singled on a line drive to right field, scoring Ronald Acuna Jr. to tie the game at 1 all. Next batter, Eugenio Suarez hit a 2 RBI single to center field to take the lead 3-1. In the fifth inning, Luis Rengifo scored thanks to a line drive by Anthony Santander. Throughout the game, Venezuela pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and only gave up one run. Venezuela would go on to defeat Nicaragua 4-1 and advance to 3-0 in the tournament.
