Road-rage confrontation: Killer of ex-Saint faces sentencing (Yahoo Sports)

FILE - This April 10, 2016, file photo provided by the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office shows Cardell Hayes. Hayes, who killed former New Orleans Saints star Will Smith in an argument following a traffic crash, avoided a mandatory life sentence when a jury convicted him of manslaughter instead of second-degree murder. But Hayes may still be locked away for a very long time if prosecutors get their way at a sentencing hearing Wednesday, April 19, 2017. (Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office via AP, File)

It was a road-rage confrontation that cost former New Orleans Saints star Will Smith his life. Now, more than a year later, the man who pumped eight bullets into Smith is about to learn his punishment. Cardell Hayes, 29, appeared to have caught something of a break at his December trial when a jury rejected the prosecution’s push for a second-degree murder verdict, which would have meant mandatory life in prison.

The Carolina Panthers made sure Kawann Short’s contract situation wasn’t going to end the same away Josh Norman’s did a year ago. The Panthers signed Short, their franchise player, to a five-year contract extension on Monday, keeping the Pro Bowl defensive tackle with the team through the 2021 season. In 2016, the Panthers had place the franchise tag on Norman, an All-Pro cornerback, only to later rescind the offer after being unable to reach terms on a contract extension.
