Auston Matthews Pulled Off A Video Game Assist In Real Life

You know that Auston Matthews can score. The Leafs center is on pace for 44 goals, which, if you throw out the guys who started in the WHA, would tie him for seventh all-time among NHL rookies. He didn’t score last night in a wild 6-5 loss to Washington, but one of his two assists was every bit as highlight-reelworthy.

Shea Weber Scores In Return To Nashville

It still feels strange to see Shea Weber in a Canadiens uniforms—he might’ve been the only player in franchise history to look right in Predators yellow—but at least the building and the crowd and the cheers were familiar. After 11 seasons there, Weber played his first game back in Nashville since a stunning offseason…

Red Wings Force Centennial Classic Overtime With Buzzer-Beater Goal

The hockey buzzer-beater is a rare event, but the Red Wings pulled it off as Anthony Mantha poked in Detroit’s second goal of the final two minutes—and the seventh of the third period—to force overtime at today’s outdoor Centennial Classic at Toronto’s “Exhibition Stadium.”

The Hurricanes Playing Their Equipment Manager As Emergency Goalie Is The Best Kind Of Cheesy Sports Story

Why no one has made a cheesy sports movie about an emergency goalie getting to achieve his dream for one night is a mystery to me, because emergency goalies are some of the best cheesy sports stories that can regularly happen in real life. A 31-year-old bank manager who played club hockey at Arizona State, suiting up for the Coyotes! A former video scout who failed to walk onto his college hockey team, signing a one-day contract for the Sabres! These stories are cheesy as hell, nothing really happens in them, and they’re still fucking great!

The Blue Jackets Are On Fire

The Columbus Blue Jackets came out of the gate hot this season, but it didn’t feel totally real. The team’s possession stats were weak, and their PDO—a combination of shooting percentage and save percentage that tends to flatten out over time, and can indicate a team that’s just plain lucky—pointed toward them cooling off. All of this, plus the franchise’s unspectacular history, and a roster that’s just not laden with elite scorers, had observers unconvinced. And just about the only thing Columbus could do to convince people would be to keep winning. They haven’t lost since Thanksgiving weekend.

Marc-Andre Fleury Knocks One Out Of Midair

This is a remarkable, remarkably unorthodox save from Marc-Andre Fleury in the Penguins’ 5-2 win in New Jersey last night. Adam Henrique’s shot was deflected by Ian Cole and bounced up and over Fleury, who made a diving, flailing rescue with the blade of his stick to alley-oop it out of danger.

One Player Helped Get Both Goalies Knocked Out Of The Red Wings-Lightning Game

It’s not a good night for goalies in Tampa. First came an injury to Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop, on a seemingly routine save of a shot from rookie Nick Jensen in the first period. Though the play seemed innocuous enough, Bishop soon left the game, and the team later announced that he was out with a lower-body injury and would not return.
