Doncic set to sign $207M extension in Slovenian celebration

Luka Doncic is set to sign a $207 million supermax extension with the Dallas Mavericks, who sent an entourage to the Slovenian star’s home country to finish off the biggest contract in franchise history. Agent Bill Duffy told ESPN and The Dallas Morning News on Monday that Doncic and the Mavericks had agreed to terms. News of Doncic’s five-year deal, which will kick in for the 2022-23 season, came as the Mavericks re-signed his most reliable scoring partner in the backcourt, shooting guard Tim Hardaway Jr., to a $75 million, four-year contract.

Tennis-Murray added to U.S. Open main draw after Wawrinka withdrawal

Murray, who had hip surgeries in 2018 and 2019, has only played a handful of ATP Tour-level events this year having missed the Australian Open because of a positive COVID-19 test and opting out of competing at the French Open. The 34-year-old Murray reached the third round at Wimbledon but withdrew from the men’s singles tournament at the Tokyo Olympics on the advice of his medical team, dashing his hopes for a third consecutive gold medal. Murray, who won the first of his three career Grand Slam titles at the 2012 U.S. Open, did represent Britain in the men’s doubles event in Tokyo where he lost in the quarter-finals.

Marcus Ericsson thought for sure his car would snap in half as he treated the slowed car in front of him like some sort of Monster Jam ramp and soared through the air and leapfrogged a spot before he slammed onto the asphalt. Airborne at the start, feeling sky high at the finish, Ericsson delivered IndyCar and Nashville a highlight that will be replayed in all sorts of promotional videos and social media posts pushing next year’s race. Nashville still hasn’t come down to Earth.

Olympics-Brazil bucks trend, celebrates record Olympic haul

Brazil ended the Tokyo Games with their best ever placing on the medal table even though the country’s athletes have had to cope with a reduction in investment since Rio hosted the Olympics five years ago. The South American nation finished 12th in Tokyo with 21 medals, one place higher than in Rio and with two more medals. Seven of the medals were gold, with Italo Ferreira capturing the first ever gold in surfing.

Jaguars WR Chark sidelined with broken finger in right hand

Jacksonville Jaguars receiver DJ Chark had surgery to repair a broken finger on his right hand, but coach Urban Meyer said Sunday the fourth-year pro is expected to be ready for the season opener next month. A second-draft pick from LSU in 2018, Chark has 140 catches for 1,888 yards and 13 touchdowns in three seasons. Chark missed three games last season because of injuries and managed 53 catches and five TDs while playing with three quarterbacks.

Bowden remembered as coaching legend on and off the field

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney called Bobby Bowden a “model” that other college coaches should follow. College football mourned the loss of one of its greatest coaches as the nation awoke to the news Sunday morning. Bowden, who won 377 games over four decades leading programs and built Florida State into one of college football’s great dynasties with two national championships, died at 91.
